The Future Vision (FV) program is a series of animatic-style animated research films which explore future roles of robotics in supporting the independent lifestyles of an ageing population.

Researchers find that testing peoples’ attitude to future technology is extremely difficult, as people struggle to imagine their own lives, homes, and work in a future context. We use animation to show stories set in future worlds with locations and characters that feel normal to today’s audience. This approach has been proven to get better customer research results than previous traditional formats. The final films were created alongside and for the RUXID Team at Toyota Research Institute, between 2019 and 2024, using ToonBoom Storyboard Pro, Adobe AfterEffects and Premiere, and a workflow that preceded generative AI.

The program was awarded Silver in the Corporate Content Awards Europe 2022 (Animation).

"Turnthepage delivered excellent research-supported storytelling and an animation style aligned to the subject matter. Judges added that the style of animation was particularly compelling and innovative."

a VISION for the business

Inspired by an elderly sushi chef who was suffering from arthritis, this 2.5 minute animated film shows a future vision for an entire supply chain, supported by robot amplification technologies.

THE GRANDKIDS ARE DUE...

It’s a wet day, Grandma’s arthritis is playing up, and the grandkids are coming to stay. It’s ok though, because while she is out visiting a friend, robotic devices clean the home and prepare the ingredients for their favourite meal.

TOGETHER, WHEREVER.

Robotics, video calls and augmented reality combine to enable Grandma to provide care and support across the generations of her family, regardless of where they are.

GRANDPA IS IN GOOD HANDS.

When Grandma is away, a new robot assistant enables a Japanese 'Baby Dankai' generation of parents to care for Grandpa, both in person and remotely. (How might robots help you care for your loved ones AND keep your job..?)

A RETURN TO THE MOUNTAINS.

After the loss of her husband, Grandma leaves the city and returns to a mountain from her past, but remains physically supported and supportive through telemetrics, robotics and haptics.

ELDERS IN AGRICULTURE.

This trilogy explores human connection to land and labour through technology. From a city community farm to a rural sweet potato farm and a vertical tomato factory, each story shows people of different ages working with robots to grow food, share knowledge, and nurture community.

THROUGH DIFFICULT TIMES

This set of films follows two seniors as they separately navigate and recover from extreme weather and surgery. Robotic support helps an elderly man prepare for and clean up after a severe storm, and a beloved cat is cared for while her owner is in hospital.

SIT TO STAND - EXPLORING DEVICES AND SCENARIOS

This set of three films follows an elderly man adapting to life after a fall. Each film tests different robot formats which provide support within the same context; all enabling him to live independently and maintain his routine, even on the difficult days.

SUPPORTED - DAWN TO DUSK

In this set of films 3 different communication and interaction modes are tested against each other, as an elderly man is physically and emotionally supported through his day.
